Interview with the Founder of MODE MADE IN BAYERN

How did the idea for MODE MADE IN BAYERN come about?
When I was searching for a tailoring workshop for my ROCKMACHERIN label, I knew one thing: My traditional skirts, rooted in Alpine heritage, should be made in the region, not outsourced abroad for cost reasons.

How did this become an association?
I joined forces with colleagues who also produce in Bavaria. The idea: Not only producers can make a difference – customers can too. Our consumption choices directly impact how and under what conditions fashion is made. Only if consumer behavior changes will the market follow.

What does the MODE MADE IN BAYERN quality mark tell customers?
It stands for regionally produced fashion that creates and preserves local jobs, supports the regional economy and traditional crafts. Producing in Bavaria also means shorter transport routes – significantly lowering CO₂ emissionscompared to clothing shipped around the globe.

How do you handle higher production costs?
Yes, local production means higher wages and expenses. But for us, it’s a sign of respect for everyone involved in making our clothing. We willingly accept lower profit margins to maintain these standards.

How do you justify the higher retail price?
In return, customers receive exceptional quality and craftsmanship – a piece of clothing that lasts a lifetime. A direct alternative to today’s throwaway fashion.

Are most members traditional costume makers?
Not exclusively – we welcome any fashion producer who shares our values: whether sportswear, hats, bags, or shoes– as long as they are made in Bavaria with a fully transparent production chain.

Former members included: Astrifa Strickwaren, Stephan Barbarino Dirndl, Angelika Böhm Handwerk, Pezzo-Strick, Taschen fürs Leben, Wollgwand, and Zopf & Falte. More info: www.modemadeinbayern.de

Since I now also produce knitwear, shirts, and simpler skirts within the EU, I have not been a member since 2023. However, many classics – especially the ROCKMACHERIN skirts and Mannszeug – are still made in Bavaria. Every piece in our shop clearly states its country of origin.
